The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) once again achieved gender parity in its productions this year, 63% of which are currently produced by women or by teams in which there are as many or more women than their male colleagues.
In addition, 66% of the production budgets of current projects have been allocated to productions directed by women, the NFB said in a press release on Wednesday.
The federal agency is thus once again fulfilling its commitment made seven years ago to achieve gender parity in both the number of productions and production budgets.
The objective was also to achieve parity in the main creative positions. In screenwriting, the presence of women is 67%, while it reaches 70% in editing. On the other hand, work remains to be done in the sector of musical composition where the presence of women is only 20%, as well as in the direction of photography (43%).
The NFB said Wednesday that it will launch the 1er next April an optional and confidential self-declaration questionnaire for filmmakers and production teams working on the production of films, in order “to evaluate the progress made in terms of its commitments and to report on it publicly”.
