These three American productions expected in Montreal this winter will bring a breath of fresh air to the Quebec audiovisual industry which suffered greatly from the impact of strikes by American actors and screenwriters earlier this year.
Last month, the president of the Quebec Alliance of Image and Sound Technicians (AQTIS 514 IATSE), Christian Lemay, told the Newspaper that several Hollywood productions will settle in Montreal at the beginning of 2024. Sources confirm to us that the next film in the saga Karate Kid will be one of them.
Recently announced, this sixth Karate Kid will bring together Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio on screen in their respective roles of Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso (the hero of the very first feature film in the saga, released in 1984).
Absent from the last two films of the franchise, the character of Daniel LaRusso had returned to service in Cobrai Kaithe Netflix series derived from Karate Kid. As for the legendary Jackie Chan, 69, he played alongside Jaden Smith (the son of Will Smith) in the fifth film of the franchise, released in 2010.
The rest of the cast of the next Karate Kid has not yet been revealed. In a video broadcast two weeks ago on the Sony Pictures YouTube channel, Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio announced that they were looking for the next Karate Kid to star alongside them in the film and that they were inviting young people actors interested in submitting their application on the KarateKidCasting.com website
It’s director Jonathan Entwistle (I’m Not Okay with This) who will be in charge of the new Karate Kid. Filming, which was originally scheduled to take place this fall (but was delayed by the actors’ strike) is scheduled to begin in early April. The film’s release date has been set for December 13, 2024.
