The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is revealed. We knew the identity of the president of the jury, the director of barbie, Greta Gerwig, that of the host of the opening and closing ceremonies, the French actress Camille Cottin. The Festival revealed on Thursday March 21 one of the first films presented on the Croisette. This is the blockbuster Furiosa: a Mad Max saga, by Australian director George Miller. The film will be screened on May 15, the day after the start of the festival, which will run until May 25. Franceinfo takes stock of what we know about this edition, the official selection of which will be made public on April 11.

Greta Gerwig, first American filmmaker president of the jury

American director Greta Gerwig was named president of this edition in December. The actress and screenwriter succeeds Swedish director Ruben Östlund, whose jury awarded the Palme d’Or in 2023 to Anatomy of a fall. She is “the first American filmmaker to endorse” this role, underlined the festival. And she is the first woman to access this prestigious position since actress Cate Blanchett in 2018. Because in this key position at the festival, men remain over-represented, with notable exceptions, such as New Zealand director Jane Campion or Isabelle Huppert. “I deeply love films. I love making them, I love going to see them, I love talking about them for hours. As a film buff, Cannes has always been for me the pinnacle of what the universal language of films can represent”reacted Greta Gerwig after the announcement of her appointment.

George Miller and “Mad Max” return to the Croisette

Thierry Frémaux, the general delegate of the festival, this year attracted one of the most anticipated feature films of the year. Furiosa: a Mad Max saga will be presented in preview, nine years after having hosted Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth part of the post-apocalyptic saga, signed by Australian director George Miller. The feature film will be presented out of competition on May 15, in the presence of actors Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke, and will be released on French screens a week later.

He will return to the origins of Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. Anya Taylor-Joy, whose career exploded with the Netflix series The Queen’s Game, takes over to tell the story of the heroine’s youth. Captured by a horde of bikers led by the warlord Dementus, she will try to find her way home. “The idea for this prequel has been in my head for over ten years.”said George Miller. “I am delighted to return to the Cannes Film Festival (…) There is no better place than the Croisette to discover this film with audiences from around the world”he stressed.

Camille Cottin, mistress of ceremonies

Camille Cottin will officiate as mistress of the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival. The French actress, who began in the comic register with her character Assholebecame known to the general public with her interpretation of Andréa Martel, artistic agent in the series Ten percent. This role notably opened the doors to French cinema and Hollywood, where she played with Ridley Scott (House of Gucci), with Matt Damon in Marseille (Stillwater) or in a biopic about former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir (golda).

Xavier Dolan, president of the Un certain regard jury

Quebec director Xavier Dolan returns to Cannes to chair the jury for the Un Certain Regard selection, the main section parallel to the official competition, dedicated to auteur cinema. Revealed in 2009 with the film I killed my motherhe has already presented two feature films in this selection: Imaginary loversin 2010, and Laurence Anywaysin 2012. If he does not present a film for this edition, Xavier Dolan has already won two prizes on the Croisette: the Jury Prize in 2014 for Mommy and the Grand Prix in 2016 for Just the end of the world.

He had announced his retirement in 2023, saying in an interview with the magazine GQ do not have “no more desire”. His return to Cannes is therefore a little surprise. “Even more than making films, discovering the talents of other filmmakers has always been essential in my personal and professional career. This mandate will be an opportunity to dedicate myself, with the members of the Un certain regard jury, to something artistically essential: films, and their quest for truth”he said in the press release released by the festival.

Some posters revealed

The official poster for this 77th edition has not yet been made public. But in the meantime, the festival has revealed those of certain parallel selections. Critics’ Week is thus honoring actress Hafsia Herzi.

The Japanese filmmaker and writer Takeshi Kitano opened his workshop to the organizers of the Fortnight so that they could choose one of his paintings. This offbeat work will be the signature of this selection this year.

L’Acid (Independent Cinema Association) also unveiled its poster, created by illustrator Feline Pessey, aka Lemon Fee.
