Asia is the part of the world that has been most affected by weather-related disasters in 2023. Tajikistan is not spared, so the authorities have put in place a program to better protect climate-displaced people.

Climatic disasters such as spectacular floods or landslides are more frequent and increasingly serious. Central Asia was particularly hit by disasters linked to global warming in 2023. Tajikistan, a small mountainous country, was not spared. For several hundred meters, houses are almost glued to each other. They shelter the country’s many climate-displaced people. This is the most visible part of the government project for the most vulnerable people, those who lived near the risk areas.

A city still under construction

It’s a new life, far from home. After a difficult start, everyone adapted to a different environment and no one regrets it today. Young and old no longer want to leave. Everyone has plans and can dream of a better life. In recent years, 45,000 Tajiks have been relocated by the authorities, notably in Khourosson, 70 kilometers from the capital Dushanbe. The city is still under construction to accommodate new climate-displaced people. As the climate outlook is not good, the city is thinking even bigger and expanding further.
