The new information podcast “What does it say?” from franceinfo

franceinfo has launched its new information podcast for 15-25 year olds, from 7 a.m., Monday to Friday, with Léo Tescher, the important news of the day explained in 5 minutes flat. “What does it say ?” can be found on all podcast platforms.

A summary of the news, with the important news of the day broken down in 5 minutes, for 15-25 year olds, has just been created by franceinfo. What does it say ? Monday to Friday from 7 a.m., can be found on all podcast platforms.

Emmanuelle Daviet, the Radio France antenna mediator, receives Estelle Cognacq, deputy director of franceinfo and director of the Radio France agency, and Léo Tescher, journalist at franceinfo.

Emmanuelle Daviet: Estelle Cognacq, why did Franceinfo launch its new information podcast for 15/25 year olds?

Estelle Cognacq: So the idea is to reach an audience who doesn’t necessarily follow our traditional media, like radio or TV. We want franceinfo to be a brand that is also a reference in current affairs for the youngest, and in this case, we have to go where they are, that is to say on podcast platforms, on social networks. TikTok, we’re already there, soon Snapchat, and above all with formats that are adapted to their practices. It is we who must adapt, and not tell ourselves that they will spontaneously come to us, as was the case before.

Emmanuelle Daviet: Léo Tescher, you are the voice, you carry this new news event. What subjects do you prioritize?

Leo Tescher: Above all, my favorite subjects, in any case, in this podcast, are necessarily social themes. Subjects that particularly affect young people, and for which we feel that they want to get involved. At the moment, inevitably, it’s school bullying.

I can unfortunately decline it every morning, but we must also be careful not to overwhelm this young listener, to vary the subjects. I also talk a lot about culture, video games, series, music and sport, but not just football and rugby at the moment.

Are there any topics you avoid?

In truth, I can’t afford to avoid it, because Franceinfo’s promise is to talk about all subjects. But it’s certain that if I make a little controversy or a political agenda, it will be completely out of step with the listeners we want to meet. So, if I have to talk about politics, I try to stay concrete.

There, right now, this week, it was ecological planning. If I have to talk about news items on heavier subjects, I try to preserve the listener who can perhaps go up to 30 years old, but who can also be 14 years old and therefore, to accompany them, to warn him that be careful, these are difficult subjects, to practice prevention, to say: “you can have an adult accompany you, you can download this application or call this phone number to be accompanied”.

Your podcasts are very rhythmic, very rich in sounds and it looks like this:

Emmanuelle Daviet: How do you work? What time is this podcast produced?

I arrive at the radio a little before 3 a.m., and then from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., I start with the sounds that are in our base at franceinfo, sounds that are produced by the reporters, and I put together lots of very short little extracts . I’m also going to look for other things, which you won’t necessarily find on the Franceinfo radio channel. Atmospheres, cinema references, series, music. The idea is to operate like on social networks, when we see all these little gifs, these little diversions, the idea is to make the same sounds in fact. And for that, I even created a TikTok account a few weeks ago to see how young people talk about current events on the networks.

We heard it in this podcast from September 28, you address the listener on familiar terms. For what reasons ?

It’s easier for me that way. I am writing in any case, which is aimed at young people, more dynamic, I address myself directly to them, and that does not prevent me from always being identified “franceinfo” and as we likes to say here, “Not just the news, but the right info”.

The familiarity creates an effect of proximity, Estelle Cognacq, there is also interactivity with the listeners thanks to WhatsApp. What is the principle ?

Estelle Cognacq: So, it’s brand new, we’ve been on it for a long week, and it actually allows franceinfo to be interactive, which is not so much the case today, on the air radio, and a little bit on the website via live.

So we send the podcast every morning What does it say ?and then in the evening, our news recap Story News., and then the news for young people. And we actually ask them to react, to give us emojis, hearts, pluses, Léo plays very well too. And then also, Leo in the morning, and those who do the elements in the evening respond to each other and put in a little bit of collusion. We also try to be a little less academic and more discussion.

Normally, there must be surveys that will be set up. We’re already doing it with emojis, but afterwards, it will also be good for us to ask them what subjects interest them, how we want to inform them. We also listen, we also want to know how people today want to get information.

You can find “What does it say ?” every day, Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m., on all podcast platforms.
