The need for psychologists will be met in 2026, estimates Minister Carmant

(Quebec) The need for psychologists in the health network will be met in two years, according to estimates from the Minister of Social Services, Lionel Carmant.

During the study of budgetary appropriations on Thursday, he explained that there were 2,271 psychologists currently in the network and that the needs stood at 2,340 for this year, therefore a shortage of 69.

In recent years, we have seen a downward trend in the number of psychologists in the network. For example, for 2024, there were 156 hires compared to 165 departures, therefore a net loss of nine psychologists compared to last year, explained the minister.

However, Mr. Carmant assures that this trend is being reversed thanks to several programs set up, in particular scholarships of $25,000 for students who commit to working two years in the public sector. “The first year in which we will have filled our positions is 2026,” said the minister.

It is expected that the needs will then be at 2,461 and that there will be 2,510 psychologists in the network, according to figures provided by the minister’s office.

The public health system is facing an exodus of psychologists to the private sector, which the minister wishes to curb. “In terms of health professionals, psychologists are those who have had the most. They had a salary increase, ultimately, of 30%, which is extremely significant,” he maintained.
