Officially, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party holds power in Ottawa. In practice, the influence of Jagmeet Singh and the NDP blows my mind. To stay in power, the Liberals conceded disproportionate influence to the NDP, which obtained less than 20% of the votes. Not always in Canada’s interest.

Last Monday, Canada reviewed its foreign policy regarding Israel amid agitation and panic, under pressure from an NDP motion. It is said in Ottawa that the Liberals were running in panic to change words in the text of the resolution and to influence the vote of MPs. Amateurism and improvisation on an issue of great sensitivity.
It is legitimate to put pressure on to redress the humanitarian situation in Gaza. But Canada’s approach to Israel and Palestine was not written on a napkin. A serious country must demonstrate consistency and above all it should not change according to the moods of the fourth party in the House of Commons.
Regardless, the NDP won its bet and changed Canada’s position. To the point where resignations could occur in the Liberal caucus.

New programs
But international politics is just one example. All the major actions taken by the Liberal government in recent months seem to be the result of the alliance with the NDP. Billions for drug insurance: the NDP claims victory. Billions for a dental care program: the NDP takes the credit.
In both cases, the federal government is interfering with both hands in provincial jurisdictions. In other words, the federal government’s entire vision of federalism is becoming tinged with the centralizing obsession of the New Democrats.
These programs and several other expenses are part of the conditions imposed by the NDP to maintain its support for the Liberals. We end up seeing that the influence of the NDP also has a major impact on the budget.

Not finished
The NDP is now calling for further interference in education. They want a national program to feed children in school. Who is willing to bet that the Liberal government will not give in again?
Foreign affairs, new programs, relations with the provinces, budget, whoever leads the game in these matters is not far from being able to boast of leading the country. This is how Jagmeet Singh must feel.
Meanwhile, Canada’s economy is far from doing well. I don’t even dare talk about government finances. And Canada is becoming a laughing stock in the world. Jagmeet Singh leads Canada, but perhaps he is leading it to rout…
This is not the first time that the NDP has enjoyed such influence. The creation of the Canadian health care system, monopolistic, expensive and inefficient, is a socialist fad of the NDP. Who had embraced and implemented the idea? A man named Pierre Elliott Trudeau.
History repeats itself, doesn’t it?
