What a path for the license predator. The first opus released in 1987 starring the young Arnold Schwarzenegger who faces the terrible alien hunters, then had three additional films to which are added two crossovers with the saga Alien. This time it’s a rather special prequel that will arrive on the platform Hulu and Disney+ August 5.

The film takes place in 1719 and the Predators are already prowling in North America. Bloodthirsty creatures stalk bison and humans, native Comanche warriors to French trappers. Native American actress Amber Midthunder plays the leading role here, playing Naru, a young Native woman who must both fight the invisible monster, while confronting sexism within her tribe.

This Native American people takes the central role for the first time in a production 20th Century Studioswho belongs to Disney. A decision hailed by the lead actress, “support an action film that not only has a heroine, but also an indigenous heroine… That’s something I don’t think I’ve ever seen“, entrusted Amber Midthunder.

The Comanches earned their reputation as terrible warriors by facing off against European settlers and enemy tribes in the 19th century. But they have often been wrongly portrayed as a bloodthirsty and brutal people in Hollywood, like the western The Prisoner of the Desert from 1956. “Native Americans are often relegated to the rank of sidekicks or villains, and never heroes” in the film industry, lamented Dan Trachtenberg director of Prey to the Comic Con from San Diego last month.

The dialogues of the feature film will be composed of several languages: English, French and Comanche. But Prey will benefit from a dubbing entirely in indigenous language, a first for a blockbuster according to its producer Jhane Myers.
