The President of the Republic wanted a national tribute to be paid to Robert Badinter on Wednesday February 14 at 12 p.m., franceinfo learned on Saturday February 10 from the Élysée. Former Minister of Justice died on the night of Thursday February 8 to Friday February 9at the age of 95.

The tribute will be held at Place Vendôme in Paris, seat of the Ministry of Justice for 300 years. The former Minister of Justice of François Mitterrand will be remembered in particular as the architect of the abolition of the death penalty in France or the decriminalization of homosexuality.

The Élysée reminds that collections of condolences are available to everyone at the Chancellery, which exceptionally left its doors open all weekend.

Upon the announcement of the death of the former lawyer, the head of state had written about “Robert Badinter never stopped pleading for the Enlightenment. He was a figure of the century, a republican conscience, the French spirit.” Emmanuel Macron attended a minute of silence observed at the National School of the Judiciary on Friday, in the presence of Gérald Darmanin and Eric Dupond-Moretti.
