The National Rally “does not offer anything” in the European election campaign, said Emmanuel Macron in an interview published on Saturday April 27 by the regional dailies of the Ebra group, including The Republican East. “Seven years ago, they wanted to leave Europe and the euro. Two years ago, we didn’t really know anymore”attacked the head of state, questioned by a dozen young Europeans on the sidelines of his visit to Strasbourg on Friday.

“Today what are they voting for when they are in the European Parliament? They say they are with the farmers, but they are not voting for the CAP! They are serving people with demagoguery”says the president, while his party’s candidate, Valérie Hayer, is well behind in the polls by the favorite Jordan Bardella, president of the RN. “A receptacle of anger does not make a program and the aggregation of frustrations does not make a project.”

Following his speech on the EU delivered at the Sorbonne, Emmanuel Macron said he was ready to “open the debate” of a European defense which would include nuclear weapons. “Let’s put everything on the table and look at what really protects us in a credible way”declared the head of state, adding that France would keep “its specificity, but is ready to contribute more to the defense of European soil”. Since Brexit, France is the only EU state to have a nuclear deterrent.
