In France, euthanasia is still illegal. However, on Tuesday September 13, the National Consultative Ethics Committee (CCNE) issued an opinion which could change the situation. It supports the idea of ​​active assistance in dying for patients whose vital prognosis is committed in the medium term. “Does our death belong to us? (…) It is the role of CCNE to be a compass for both citizens and politicians to try to move forward on such a complex subject”says Jean-François Delfraissy, President of CCNE.

Since 2016, the principle of deep and continuous sedation has been applied for patients whose death is near. The law also provides for non-relentless treatment. But associations are asking for a new law to obtain the right to die with dignity. “Now each and every one of us must be able to decide on our ultimate moment”, defends Jean-Luc Romero-Michel, president of the ADMD. A citizen consultation on the end of life has been launched.
