The President of the National Assembly paid tribute to the memory of the former Minister of Justice, who died Friday at the age of 95. The deputies respected a minute of silence.

“In this hemicycle where his voice resounds, in an unforgettable session in September 1981, it is with deep sadness, and indescribable emotion, that I want to evoke before you the memory of the great republican who has just left us”. Yaël Braun-Pivet opened, Tuesday February 13, the question session to the government with a tribute to Robert Badinter, who died on Friday at the age of 95.

“Robert Badinter, however, seemed immortal”continued the President of the National Assembly. “For more than half a century we have seen him act tirelessly: the criminal lawyer, the highly listened to advisor of François Mitterrand, the Keeper of the Seals taking oratory art to its supreme level, but also the president of the Constitutional Council, senator and honorary president of the movement for the universal abolition of the death penalty.”

The deputies then respected a minute of silence in memory of the former Minister of Justice. A national tribute ceremony will be organized on Wednesday at the chancellery. Emmanuel Macron will speak on the question of Robert Badinter’s possible entry into the Pantheon.
