As expected, on Tuesday October 8, the National Assembly rejected the motion of censure tabled by the New Popular Front against the government of Michel Barnier.

In total, 197 deputies voted for this motion of censure, far from the 289 votes necessary to reach an absolute majority. The National Rally did not vote this proposal, submitted by the left and defended by the Socialist Party. It was the first motion of censure filed against the new government.

This motion was signed by 192 of the 193 deputies of the New Popular Front, joined by a handful of deputies. At the podium, the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure had castigated the “democratic hijacking” of the government, the fruit according to him of a “electoral hold-up”. The Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, for his part denounced censorship “a priori”.
