The National Assembly increases the mandate fees of deputies by 300 euros per month

An extension for MPs’ expenses. The National Assembly decided, Wednesday January 24, to increase the advance of deputies’ mandate expenses by a little more than 300 euros per month, citing inflation, according to a press release from the office of the institution. The decision to increase the AFM from 5,645 euros to 5,950 euros (+5.4%) per month was taken with the support of almost all political groups present at the time of the vote. Insoumise France, for its part, abstained.

This augmentation “aims to respond to the rise in prices faced by MPs in the exercise of their mandate. As a reminder, the AFM is not remuneration for MPs: it is an allocation enabling them to pay their parliamentary permanence, their travel, their accommodation and documentation costs”, reception or representation, underlines the office of the Assembly. These expenses have been controlled since 2018 and unused sums must be returned to the National Assembly treasury.

After having approved it the day before, the National Rally requested on Thursday the postponement of this increase on the grounds that it “rightly arouses a certain stir among our compatriots at a time when the purchasing power of many French people is very degraded”, write Hélène Laporte and Sébastien Chenu, RN vice-presidents of the National Assembly, in a press release. They therefore ask the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, to “postpone sine die” This measure.
