After the Senate, the National Assembly in turn adopted on the night of Tuesday May 14 to Wednesday May 15 the constitutional revision reforming the electoral body of the provincial election of New Caledonia, against a backdrop of violence in the archipelago.

The government’s bill was adopted by 351 votes in favor and 153 against. The National Rally and the Republicans largely voted in favor, like the overwhelming majority of the presidential camp, with the exception of a handful of MoDem deputies. Left-wing deputies opposed it.

The debates progressed slowly on Tuesday, with little scandal, despite peaks of tension between Gérald Darmanin and La France insoumise, the Minister of the Interior accusing the rebellious deputies “obstruction” parliamentary, with amendments sometimes changing a single word or expression.

Emmanuel Macron warned in the wake of this vote that Parliament would meet in Congress “before the end of June” to ratify this constitutional revision, if the separatists and loyalists do not find an agreement on a more global text.

“It will be a question, collectively and responsibly, of finding an agreement which goes beyond the mere thaw [du corps électoral] and takes into account the path traveled and the aspirations of each person”writes the Head of State in a letter to New Caledonian representatives.

In this letter, Emmanuel Macron also condemns THE “unworthy and unacceptable character” violence. He also specifies that he asked Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories Gérald Darmanin to receive the “representatives of independence and non-independence political forces in Paris”.
