The mysteries of migration at the Domaine de Lindre in the Pays de Sarrebourg

The Domain of Lindre

Owned by the Department since 1976, this biodiversity paradise of around 1,000 hectares is made up of 12 fish ponds, reedbeds, forests and wet meadows.

Since 2021, place classified as a biosphere reserve, it is the highest label for natural areas

“The priorities of a biosphere reserve are to contribute to the conservation of ecosystems, landscapes, species; to encourage economic development that respects nature and local culture…”

The mysteries of migration

When the days get shorter, the trees turn yellow, the cold sets in and food becomes scarcer, the birds migrate to more suitable places. A long journey awaits them…

Thibault Glasser and Cédric Genthilhomme from Domaine de Lindre in the heart of the Saulnois tell us about the mysteries of migration.

Did you know that 2 out of 3 birds fly at night, they save time in their migration: during the day they eat, at night they migrate

Common Cranes

Endurance and speed records

  • The red kite flies 54 km on average
  • The common crane can fly at 100km/h in top speed
  • The swallow can cover 12,000 km in 34 days between South Africa and Siberia

70,000 km / round trip between the Arctic to Antarctica for the Arctic tern, a bird that you can observe on Lindre pond

In their peril, many obstacles await them: wind turbines, high voltage lines, storms…

The Triple-banded Wren with its “crested” congener, one of the two smallest birds in Europe, they weigh only 5 to 5.5 grams and we know that only 25% of the population will not return to France because they are caught in the storms they hadn’t foreseen.
