(Los Angeles) Mean Girlsa new version in the form of a musical comedy of the 2004 film of the same name, raked in $28 million in revenue at the North American box office between Friday and Sunday, according to figures from specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
The new film, released Friday in the United States and produced by Paramount, is adapted from the Broadway musical itself based on the first Mean Girls (2004).
It tells the story of students we love to hate and is directed by actress Tina Fey, who wrote the first screenplay.
She finds her role as a math teacher alongside Angourie Rice, Renee Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho and Bebe Wood. Lindsay Lohan, star of the first film, only makes a brief appearance this time.
“It’s an excellent start for the sequel to a teen comedy,” said analyst David A. Gross, adding that the new film – which attracts a rather young and female audience – is off to a better start than the original.
The Beekeeper, from Amazon and MGM studios, ranks second with $16.8 million for its theatrical release. In this action film, Jason Statham plays a former military member of the special forces, now a beekeeper, who seeks revenge on a mysterious group whose cruel scams led to the suicide of an elderly woman.
Moving from first to third place, Wonka from Warner Bros. raised $8.4 million.
The fantastic film, complete with songs, sees Timothée Chalamet take on the role of the eccentric chocolatier from Roald Dahl’s novel and has just surpassed the $500 million mark in worldwide revenue.
The romantic comedy Anyone but You Sony is in fourth place with $6.9 million in revenue. Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, seen recently in Top Gun: Maverickplay two lovebirds whose initial romance is marred by misunderstandings.
In fifth place, the animated film Migration from Universal and studio Illumination raked in $6.2 million. An extravagant family of mallard ducks is seeking to reach Jamaica from the northeastern United States. The French voices bring together Pio Marmaï, Laure Calamy and Waly Dia.
