Illegal dumping of rubbish is common in Gex, in the Ain. To combat this, the police are assisted by surveillance cameras that monitor voluntary drop-off points.

The municipal police of Gex (Ain) detects acts of incivility, such as putting trash cans in the street rather than throwing them in the column provided for this purpose. For some time now, the officers have had new assistants: cameras dedicated to monitoring voluntary drop-off points. They are triggered by artificial intelligence and track fly-tipping, a real scourge in the town.

Residents badge in to drop off their rubbish and pay 97 cents per 35-litre bag. Some try to avoid this tax, but the cost does not explain everything. Near Switzerland, the city of Gex is said to have several unscrupulous Swiss neighbours. It also has to deal with a high turnover of its population, with residents who are not very involved. Municipal police officers are also investigating on the ground. They can hand out fines ranging from 500 to 14,000 euros.
