The newspaper strike South West was suspended Thursday evening without an agreement having been reached, announced Friday June 14 a representative of the National Union of Journalists (SNJ) to France Bleu Périgord. Like Thursday, the paper version of the regional daily does not appear on Friday. The newspaper will be back on newsstands on Saturday.

Mobilized since March, the editorial staff of the regional daily has decided to renew the strike movement to denounce negotiations “at an impasse” around the management’s economic and social plan. It provides for the elimination of 118 positions, including 22 journalists, “in defiance of all strategic logic”, deplores on France Bleu Périgord, Jonathan Guérin, representing SNJ in Sud Ouest.

“Editorial is 60% of turnover, it would touch the heart of the reactor.”

In Dordogne, two journalists’ positions are threatened, one in Périgueux and one in Sarlat, specifies Jonathan Guérin. “This amounts to saying concretely that we would close the Sarlat agency and that we would no longer cover a quarter of the department”, he laments. Because “we cannot produce local news by covering Sarlat news from Bergerac or Périgueux, it is not possible”.

For the editorial staff of the newspaper South West, “It’s heartbreaking to go on strike at a time when important things are happening in our country, but we consider that we are at a crucial moment in our company”explains Jonathan Guérin.
