Only 146 votes for. The National Assembly rejected on Monday July 11 the motion of left censure of the government of Elisabeth Borne. The head of government had denounced in advance a “trial of intent”where the Nupes saw a “clarification”. The left alliance did not quite make the full of the 151 votes in total of the rebellious, socialists, ecologists and communists. Six socialists defected, including Valérie Rabault and a non-signatory of the motion, Dominique Potier. The only voter outside Nupes is the sovereignist Nicolas Dupont-Aignan.

This is far from enough to overthrow the government, which would have required an absolute majority of 289 votes and was impossible without the votes of deputies LR and RN. “It was not a surprise. La Nupes wanted to count themselves”reacted Elisabeth Borne. “Now we get to work.” For government spokesman Olivier Véran, “the Nupes congress is over”.

“The moment of truth has come. This motion of no confidence will serve as a political clarification”had previously attacked the leader of the LFI group Mathilde Panot against the Prime Minister. “Those who do not vote for this motion of no confidence will be the supporters of your policy”from pension reform to “the policy of breakage and social injustice”she added in a stormy atmosphere.

The motion was intended as a demonstration of “distrust” with regard to Elisabeth Borne who does not have an absolute majority in the National Assembly and did not request a vote of confidence on July 7, during her declaration of general policy. “You do not derive your legitimacy from the legislative elections, or even from Parliament” and “you are, in this function, a democratic anomaly”launched Mathilde Panot.

The Prime Minister retorted during her speech: “We are debating a motion of censure sewn with a trial of intent which is an obstacle to parliamentary work.” With the rejection of the motion of censure, the Assembly can resume its work and will seize on Monday evening the bill on health security and its “braking measures” in the face of the resurgence of Covid-19, the first text of the legislature.
