The motion of censure following the use of 49.3 for the 2023-2027 public finance programming law was largely rejected in the National Assembly, on the night of Friday September 29 to Saturday September 30. In total, 193 elected officials voted in favor, while the required majority was 289 votes. “Consequently, the public finance programming bill for the years 2023-2027 is considered adopted on new reading,” declared the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet.

Elisabeth Borne used article 49.3 of the Constitution on Wednesday, for the 12th time since she was at Matignon. The Prime Minister has decided to hold her government accountable for adopting the 2023-2027 public finance programming law (LPFP).

Consequently, the left-wing Nupes alliance announced the tabling of a motion of censure during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, a few minutes after the use of article 49.3 by Elisabeth Borne. “The Prime Minister therefore opens the season of authoritarian 49.3, we the Nupes, for our part, open our season of popular censorship”declared MP Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI group in the National Assembly, shortly after midnight.

The censorship had little chance of passing, as the Les Républicains (LR) deputies did not vote for it. This was the 18th motion of censure filed against the Prime Minister since her arrival at Matignon.
