Social housing: the Ministry of Housing wants to better control the financial situation of tenants

To cope with the large number of applications from households wanting to access social housing, the Ministry of Housing intends to strengthen control of the financial and property situations of tenants. Provisions already provided for by law.
Some social housing tenants could soon no longer be eligible because their income is too high. The Ministry of Housing wishes in any case to put an end to leases tenants who are too well off. 8% would be affected. The objective is to facilitate mobility in the social park. 5.2 million social housing units exist today in France, and 1.8 million households would be candidates.
The law already provides for controls
Some people sometimes wait up to 10 years to find housing. The minister, Guillaume Kasbarian, therefore wants landlords to regularly assess the financial and property situation of tenants to increase rents or end the lease. But the provision is already written into law. “We check tenants’ resources every year, anyone who is an HLM tenant knows this. (…) We also control family composition“, specifies Marianne Louise, general director of the Social Housing Union.
