Katia Dubreuil, former president of the Magistrates’ Union, was the first witness to be heard, on the second day of the trial of Eric Dupond-Moretti, Tuesday November 7. While the Minister of Justice is accused of having used his functions to settle scores with magistrates, Katia Dubreuil estimated that “the minister will remain in denial of this conflict of interest”. She states that she was “interlocked” by the words of Eric Dupond-Moretti on this subject.

“Mass has been said”. During his questioning this morning, Eric Dupond-Moretti declared on the stand: “I understood that whatever I might say, deep down, the mass is said”. But this trial, he defended himself, “it’s not the evil Keeper of the Seals against justice that would work perfectly”. He then asked to the judges of“imagine” what he “falls on it” when he was appointed minister in July 2020. “I have one goal, which is to succeed in my ministry. The rest I don’t care about.”

Around twenty people called to testify. They will be heard during this trial which is scheduled to last until November 16. Among them, the former Minister of Justice Nicole Belloubet, present in the room at the opening of the hearing, the former Prime Minister Jean Castex or the former attorney general at the Court of Cassation, François Molins.

Two separate cases. Eric Dupond-Moretti is suspected of having used his position as Minister of Justice to settle scores with magistrates with whom he had conflicts during his career as a lawyer. He faces five years of imprisonment, a fine of 500,000 euros and an additional penalty of ineligibility and prohibition from holding public office.
