Damien Legrand, lawyer for the family of Aurélie Langelin, interviewed by France 3, believes that there have been shortcomings in this case. On behalf of the family, he had sent a letter to the Ministry of Justice to request an inspection mission, as had been the case after the feminicides of Mérignac (Gironde) and Hayange (Moselle), also committed in May 2021. In this letter, he denounced what he considers to be “police and judicial dysfunctions”, without which “that woman wouldn’t have died”. According to the lawyer, Aurélie Langelin had filed several complaints and handrails since 2018 against her partner, who “have never been processed”. “There were never any sequels”, says the lawyer, because his companion “has never been summoned”.
A few hours before Aurélie’s death, the police intervened for the first time in the residence for an argument between the suspect and a neighbor. “On the spot, the attention of the police force was drawn by the presence among the witnesses of Aurélie”, indicated in June the public prosecutor of Douai during a press conference, quoted by France Bleu Nord. Aurélie Langelin then presented “Hematoma in his eye and seemed under the influence of alcohol just like Karim”, her partner.
According to the prosecutor, the police officers had questioned the victim “on the causes of this injury”, before offering her assistance, but she had disputed “having been the victim of violence” and had “refused any assistance from the emergency police. The dispute between neighbors having been settled, the police left the scene.” After the findings of the medical examiner and those made in the apartment, revealing in particular blood spatter on the walls of the bathroom, the prosecution had finally opened a judicial investigation. The suspect is currently in pre-trial detention and charged with intentional homicide by spouse.
