“In Paris and the inner suburbs, there has been an extremely significant drop in crime since the beginning of the year”rejoiced Gérald Darmanin on Friday, August 2. On a visit to Saint-Denis, the resigning Minister of the Interior notably mentioned a drop in “40% of violence on public transport, 21% fewer burglaries in the city of Saint-Denis and 50% fewer violent robberies”.
And since the beginning of the Olympic Games, “There are very few facts, thefts, assaults”he added, attributing this drop to the increased presence of law enforcement on public roads. “This week, since the start of the Olympic Games, for the entire Paris suburbs, the first figures have come in: there have been 200 arrests, including 180 in police custody.” He cited a drop in “24% fewer thefts in Paris and the inner suburbs” And “10% less vehicle theft”.
As for the terrorist threat, “several plans for violent actions have been foiled by the intelligence services”reports Gérald Darmanin. He wanted to be reassuring: “Every day we arrest individuals who we think might commit acts, but there has been no specific threat, no organisation coming from outside that would come and affect us. These are isolated individuals. We are in the prevention field.”
