In a telegram sent to the prefects, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin asks the prefects to toughen their measures on the use of pyrotechnic articles, learned franceinfo which was able to consult this document Thursday, July 6. Pyrotechnic articles, including firework mortars, were used on numerous occasions during the urban violence which multiplied after the death of Nahel, a teenager killed in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) on Tuesday June 27 during a road check.

In this telegram, the Minister indicates that the “great danger of these explosive materials for people and property, as well as for those who handle them, requires the tightening of measures aimed at limiting their use, circulation and sale“. Gérald Darmanin asks “without delay“to multiply”control operations on the public highway, in the common areas of buildings and in shops“, to close these businesses “if they don’t follow the rules“and to have”special attention to online sales sites and social networks“.

The Minister of the Interior recalls that “in recent days, 68,000 fireworks have been seized on national territory“, while customs seized “nearly 500 kg of pyrotechnic items destined for France.

A few hours earlier, the Prime Minister, during a trip to Lisieux (Calvados), assured that the government was “very mobilized to ensure the security of July 13 and 14“. Elisabeth Borne announced that there would be “preventive actions“to stop the supply of fireworks mortars.
