The Minister of Higher Education Sylvie Retailleau presented her resignation on Wednesday December 20, which was refused by the Elysée and by Matignon, according to the minister’s entourage contacted by franceinfo this Thursday evening.
Sylvie Retailleau’s entourage explains that “as soon as the bill was voted on on Tuesday, the minister reminded the Prime Minister of her deep disagreement with the measures of the law concerning students”. It was on the sidelines of the Council of Ministers, Wednesday morning, that Sylvie Retailleau presented her resignation to the President of the Republic.
“The measures concerning students would be revised if they were not censored”
“After discussion and noting that the resignation was based in particular on the question of international students, the President of the Republic therefore refused the resignation by renewing his confidence in him to carry out the projects for the future that he had entrusted to him”continues the minister’s entourage, explaining that Emmanuel Macron and Elisabeth Borne “consider themselves that this is a measure that does not suit them”.
“The President and the Prime Minister assured the minister that the measures concerning students, in particular concerning the return deposit, would be revised if they were not censored by the Constitutional Council”concludes Sylvie Retailleau’s entourage.
The adoption on Tuesday of this text, denounced by defenders of immigrants as the most regressive since the Second World War, caused a deep political crisis and the resignation of Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau.
