The Minister of Labor, Jean Boulet, announced on Wednesday a $1 increase in the Quebec minimum wage as of the 1er May, bringing it to $15.25 per hour. This will contribute to “fight against social inequalities”, he said.
“The current economic context requires us to take concrete action to improve the purchasing power of low-income people,” said Mr. Boulet at a press briefing.
The latter believes that the Legault government has always wanted to change the minimum wage “in a balanced and fair way”. But this increase must be done “while respecting the competitiveness and the ability to pay of companies”, he specified.
This increase in the minimum wage will therefore promote “the participation of Quebecers in the labor market,” believes Minister Boulet. In all, 298,900 employees will benefit, he added. The latter points out that this is also the largest percentage increase in the minimum wage since 1995.
As for the minimum wage for those paid on tips, it will increase to $12.20 per hour. This is an increase of $0.80.
For employees assigned exclusively to picking raspberries or strawberries, the minimum wage would be $4.53 (+$0.30) and $1.21 (+$0.08) per kilogram respectively.
Further details will follow.
