The world will pass the five million COVID-19 death mark this week.
The milestone of 250 million infected humans must also be exceeded in the coming days.
Statistics compiled by a team from the University of Oxford are based on official state data.
The United States is the most bereaved country with 735,941 dead, followed by Brazil (605,644), India (454,712), Mexico (286,346) and Russia (231,669).
Among the least affected countries are Finland (around 1,000 deaths), China (4,600), Australia (1,650 deaths) as well as many isolated islands in the Pacific.
Taking into account the excess mortality directly and indirectly linked to COVID-19, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the global toll of the pandemic could be two to three times higher than that officially established.
The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, recalled this weekend that with “nearly 50,000 deaths per week” in the world, “the pandemic is far from over”.
