The migrant smuggler arrested in Bayonne placed in pre-trial detention

the Suspected migrant smuggler arrested on Friday has been remanded in custody announces this Sunday the public prosecutor of Bayonne. The man in his fifties will be tried on Monday in an immediate appearance before the Bayonne Criminal Court. This Friday, he was indeed arrested when he had just dropped off a dozen migrants at Quai de Lesseps in Bayonne. The police tried to arrest him in flagrante delicto, but he ran away, in rushing on three agents, and hitting two police vehicles.

He was finally arrested later in the evening by the gendarmes in Hendaye. He was presented to the prosecution this Sunday who notified him of his custody and its presentation immediate appearance on Monday for “assistance with illegal residence and violence against persons holding public authority”. The man had been the subject of a preliminary investigation since last December, which had revealed at least 25 border crossings and the transport of 170 migrants. He was also known to the services for acts of violence in 2017.
