Prime Minister Michel Barnier has raised the possibility of a tax increase. The middle classes and workers would not be affected.
The government could raise taxes, but not for everyone. Michel Barnier is said to have assured that the middle class would be spared. In Hauts-de-France, a hospital employee who earns 2,400 euros net per month believes she contributes enough. “I am too rich to benefit from the advantages, (…) and too poor to be able to live without counting”, she observes.
To define the middle class, some economic institutes use official statistics. According to a study based on 2021 income, it is between 1,440 and 3,110 euros per month. With 3,000 euros per month, an engineer hopes that these taxes will not increase. If we want to maintain a minimum quality of life and certain leisure activities (…), day to day, it is essential to be careful“, notes the latter.
While the Prime Minister has specified that there will be no tax increase for middle-class workers, other categories of the population could be affected, such as retirees, wealthy households or businesses, explains Éric Heyer, economist at OFCE.
