Medals for the Rugby World Cup 2023 could be made thanks to the recycling of mobile phones.

Rugby World Cup 2023 medals made from used smartphones. This is what the craftsmen of the Monnaie de Paris do with pride. “It is especially [plaisant] to say that, behind, it is rugby players, participants, all the finalists who will have in their own hands what I am doing”, says a craftsman. The metal sides are compressed to 150 tons with a rather special alloy.

3 tons of metals recovered

Hundreds of thousands of used laptops have been collected from amateur rugby clubs. In total, 3 tons of metals were recovered and melted down to become heavy bronze plates. Even the gilding of the medals is done thanks to the telephones, because they contain very small quantities of gold. Eco-responsible medals, like those of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, already recycled from smartphones and computers.
