The “month of January without meat” is an initiative relayed by the association L214. A campaign received in different ways in Brittany, where a third of French meat is produced.

To see the queue in front of the butcher of the halls, to Quimper (Finistère), we have a feeling that veganism has not yet conquered the inhabitants. For some, even a single month without meat is inconceivable. “I don’t eat meat every day either, but I do like a good piece of meat”, confides a Quimpérois. “I eat less meat, but I eat better, I never buy it in the supermarket again”, slips another resident.

Meat consumption is steadily declining in France. It would thus have gone from 86 kilos per person per year in 2019 to 84.5 kilos in 2020. In Quimper, vegan menus are slowly starting to settle in the landscape, as in the VG Burger restaurant. The latter offers in particular pancakes made from mushrooms or red beans as a steak. “The taste, we would be wrong”, assures Tanguy Foucault, creator of the restaurant. In total, 88% of French people say they are sensitive to the animal cause. They are the ones that the L214 association would like to convince to modify their diet accordingly thanks to the “meat-free month”.
