After Béziers, in Hérault, it is the city of Nice, in the Alpes-Maritimes which could establish a curfew for minors under 13 in order to keep them away from delinquency. But is this really an effective measure?
To ensure safety, should minors be prohibited from going out in the evening? The question was raised on Tuesday April 23 by Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). He wants to establish a curfew for under 13s or even under 16s in certain areas. A measure already in place in Béziers
Last summer, Nice suffered urban violence after the death of Nahel. Many minors, some as young as 14, were arrested. “The police regularly arrest young people between 14 and 16 years old who are immediately released by the magistrates within 24 to 48 hours”, declares Christian Estrosi. In Béziers (Hérault), the measure was implemented on Monday April 22 at 11 p.m. in the city center and certain sensitive neighborhoods. Several associations have contacted the authorities to have the mayor’s order annulled. This decision must be legally justified, otherwise it may be overturned.
