Europe Ecologie-Les Verts presents a bill to the National Assembly to ban private jet flights in France. Marine Tondelier, the national secretary of the party defends this measure on franceinfo, she asks “everyone to make an effort”.

“Today we are asking everyone to make an effort”, justified the national secretary of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV) Marine Tondelier on Thursday April 6 on franceinfo about the bill on the ban on private jet flights which must be examined in the National Assembly, in the framework of the parliamentary niche of the environmentalist group. The text aims to prohibit flights, from or to metropolitan France, of planes with fewer than 60 passengers. “There are symbols. Everyone is now being asked to make an effort. And there is a bubble of people who can go in their private jets, drink champagne and play golf on watered grounds”she told you.

>> Climate: by demonstrating against private jets, scientists denounce an “untenable” system which favors the “ultra-rich”

“It’s not anti-rich” but “pro climate”hammered the patron saint of environmentalists who defends a measure of “social justice”. “In 2022, the use of private jets increased by 64% where food aid explodes”explained the elected official, while a four-hour flight in a private jet emits as much CO2 as an average Frenchman in a year, recalls the text carried by the ecologist deputy from Paris Julien Bayou.

According to a study carried out by the independent firm CE Delft for Greenpeace, France is the European Union country generating the most CO2 by private jets. The NGO notes an explosion in the number of private jet flights in France in three years: they rose from 18,451 in 2020 to 84,885 in 2022. In 2022, private jet flights in France emitted 383,100 tonnes of CO2 , which is equivalent, according to Greenpeace, to the average annual emissions of 85,133 French residents.
