The mayor of Quebec will miss the visit of the pope

The mayor of Quebec, Bruno Marchand, has contracted COVID-19 and will not attend the ceremonies surrounding the visit of Pope Francis to the national capital.

The sovereign pontiff must land Wednesday in the middle of the afternoon at Jean-Lesage airport. Mayor Marchand will not welcome him since according to the public health instructions in force, he must isolate himself for at least five days. It was Monday that a positive result in a screening test confirmed the contamination of the chosen one.

François will leave on Friday noon. The mayor of Quebec will therefore miss all the activities organized in the pope’s visit to the capital.

“The deputy mayor, Ms. Catherine Vallières-Roland, will take over,” wrote the City in a press release.

The mayor is experiencing “very mild” symptoms, specifies the cabinet’s communications adviser, Jean-Simon Campbell, which does not prevent him from carrying out the administrative tasks scheduled on his agenda. “He isolates himself as a preventive measure, to avoid spreading COVID,” concludes Mr. Campbell.
