The mayor of Lauterbourg Jean-Michel Fetsch has died

Jean-Michel Fetsch, 69, died suddenly on the night of June 9 to 10. He had been mayor of Lauterbourg (Bas-Rhin) since 1995, after having been a municipal councilor from 1983. He had started his 5th term in 2020. Jean-Michel Fetsch had also been a general councilor for 22 years.

“A figure of North-Alsace”

Ardent defender of his commune, but also of Alsacehe had made the buzz on Facebook in October 2017, indicating that he wanted to remove the future Grand Est sign from his town. “I am first and foremost an Alsatian and I want our grandchildren to always be Alsatians.explained Jean-Michel Fetsch at the microphone of France Bleu Alsace.

Jean-Michel Fetsch was sentenced in 2021 to a fine of 2,500 euros for public incitement to hatred. During the first confinement, he published a post on his Facebook account in which he made a connection between the confinement measures in Germany and the Nazis.

His political commitment to the right had been undermined in 2015. He had tore up his UMP card at the time of the Bygmalion affair. “He was a figure from Nord-Alsace“, indicates on his Facebook page, the president of the European Community of Alsace, Frédéric Bierry.
