Tried for embezzlement of public funds, the mayor of Colmar (Haut-Rhin), Eric Straumann, was sentenced Monday March 25 to a fine of 5,000 euros, including 2,000 suspended and to six months of suspended ineligibility, reports France Bleu Alsace. His lawyer plans to appeal this decision of the Mulhouse criminal court.

The former chief of staff of Gilbert Meyer – the former mayor of Colmar, who died in 2020 – Joël Munsch was sentenced to a fine of 3,000 euros and three years of ineligibility with provisional execution.

Eric Straumann is accused of having delayed suspending a decree from his predecessor, Gilbert Meyer, which planned to retroactively pay compensation to Joël Munsch, for an amount of 37,400 euros. Me Pierre Schultz, Eric Straumann’s lawyer, would like to point out that his client “is not the origin” of this “situation”. He believes that the current mayor of Colmar “inherited this compensation file from his predecessor”. Joël Munsch and Eric Straumann have ten days to appeal their conviction.
