The request for exemption from the mayor of Colmar, who wanted to continue watering the city’s flower beds despite the drought, was rejected by the Haut-Rhin prefecture, indicates France Bleu Alsace.

To water the flowers despite everything, residents and restaurateurs are invited to “pour all unpolluted reclaimed water into the nearest planters and flower beds”explains Mayor Éric Strauman.

This concerns water from ice buckets, carafe bottoms or even vegetable washing water. With “these actions of solidarity” the mayor hopes “maintain the city’s floral heritage without violating the measures taken by the prefecture.”

The municipality has been placed in a crisis zone since August 3, and is therefore prohibited from watering flower beds, lawns or public green spaces. But the mayor, Éric Straumann, had filed a request for exemption, highlighting the “four flowers” label for towns and villages in bloom for Colmar. Unfortunately for him, this did not convince the prefecture.
