The mayor of Châteauroux Gil Avérous, who had called on his Republican colleagues to support Emmanuel Macron (LREM) as soon as the result of the first round of the presidential election, disagreed on Monday with his party’s line. The text proposed in the political office by the LR management does not call for a second round vote for the incumbent. “The motion that was presented (…) expressed the desire of the Republicans not to bring a vote to Marine Le Pensums up Gil Avérous. But I wanted us to go further, to express our opposition to Marine Le Pen and our support for the President of the Republic.“Consequence of this disagreement: Gil Avérous is stepping down as chairman of the LR mayors’ committee.
There is a real danger – Gil Averous
“I consider that there is a real danger in the election of Marine Le Pen, that we are not safe from this election which would have catastrophic consequences for our country, continues Gil Avérous. I do not find myself in this position which, for me, is too timid.“If Gil Avérous resigns from his duties, he does not leave Les Républicains. “I’m sticking with the Republicans, though I’m kinda sorry for how things turned out“he assures. And in the future? “The next appointment is the legislative elections. We’ll wait to see how it goes. I will defend the colors of our candidates from the local right. We will see the day after the legislative elections how our party evolves. There are always reorganizations, restructurings after major elections. Today, I cannot tell you what my future will be with Les Républicains.“
