The mayor of Biot appeals to the government to save the glassworks of his town

An endless winter for the Biot glassworks? Guest of France Bleu Azur this Friday morning, Jean-Pierre Dermit, mayor of the municipality of Biot, appeals to the government to save the glassworks, struggling with soaring energy costs.

As during the coronavirus, Jean-Pierre Dermit, wishes “whatever the cost” to take over the salaries: “At the time of the covid, the government developed a plan to come to the aid of the artisanal sectors linked to tourism. […] We are hoping for the same help again.”

In 2011, the Biot glassworks switched from gas to electric, but had to renegotiate its contract. Energy represents the largest item of expenditure for the Biot glassworks, 10% of the budget. For the moment, the jobs of the twenty employees of the Biot glassworks are not threatened. “Glass is part of tourism, the economy and the growth of the municipality. This sector is in great difficulty, we really need support.” concedes the mayor.
