On April 10, five people were placed in pre-trial detention for “drug trafficking” committed in Avallon (Yonne) between January 1, 2023 and April 7, 2024, including the mayor of the town, Jamilah Habsaoui and her two brothers. She was indicted after the discovery of 70 kg of cannabis in a house belonging to her, but where the elected official did not live. During the searches, around a kilo of cocaine, two gold bars and 7,000 euros in cash were also found by the police, the Auxerre prosecutor told franceinfo.
Last May the mayor was released, but under judicial supervision, with a ban on traveling to Yonne. Having obtained the lifting of this ban, she can now resume her work and her mandate as mayor. His lawyers made the request, which was accepted on Monday by the investigating judge, despite an unfavorable opinion from the prosecution.
For the elected official’s lawyers, it is a victory. “It’s a return to an almost normal life”welcomes Master Florian Grigis. This news represents, according to him, a significant step forward in the matter, convinced that “the progress of the investigations allowed this decision”he specifies. Through her council, the mayor of Avallon wanted to reaffirm her innocence. “She remains confident that justice will prove it”continues Me Grigis.
Jamilah Habsaoui, however, remains indicted for “possession and complicity in the offer or sale of narcotics”. To date, only one person, one of the elected official’s brothers, is still in pre-trial detention in this case.
