The policy sometimes makes waves in certain municipalities, where elected officials are afraid to give their sponsorship, and that it will then be criticized by the inhabitants. To avoid any criticism, in the Var, a mayor decided to consult all his constituents.

The electoral campaign starts early, in Sainte-Anastasie-sur-Issole (Var). Here, the inhabitants will decide, in a way, who will participate in the presidential election, which candidate will receive the sponsorship of their mayor, and that motivates them. The mayor can decide alone who he sponsors. But since 2016, the anonymity of sponsorships is no longer, which can poison public life in small towns.

“I remain on the idea that politics should not necessarily appear at the level of small municipalities”, says Olivier Hoffman, Mayor (without label) from the village. The 2,000 inhabitants will therefore have to vote for the first time. “I’m not especially for a vote before the vote, but I find it nice”, said a resident. To be valid, this citizen consultation must receive at least a quarter of the voters of the village.
