A 32-year-old man who was driving a stolen van died on Saturday March 26 after being shot by a policeman who was trying to arrest him at the junction between Sevran and Aulnay-sous-Bois (Seine-Saint-Denis) , in circumstances that remain to be determined, the Bobigny prosecution told AFP.

Warned of the theft of a van, the anti-crime squad sought to control the driver who fled. For reasons that remain unclear at this stage, one of the officials then fired his service weapon once. Touched, the motorist nevertheless continued his journey on “a few hundred meters”, before ending its race by hitting parked cars. Rescued by firefighters, he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) was seized of the investigation. The policeman, hospitalized in shock, could not be heard on Saturday. The hearings of his colleagues were in progress.

Tensions arose in Sevran following the tragedy. “In the meantime and for everyone’s safety, it is essential that we keep our calm”, writes the mayor of Sevran, Stéphane Blanchet, in a press release published on the night of Saturday to Sunday. A crisis unit was convened in town hall with the prefect.
