The president of the Professional Football League (LFP), Vincent Labrune, announced, Thursday, November 2, that the meeting between Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais, which should have been played on Sunday, October 29, has been postponed until the date of December 6, in a location to be determined “subsequently”. The Olympico was unable to start and was postponed after a long wait, following projectiles being thrown at the bus transporting the Lyon team to the Vélodrome stadium. The Lyon coach, Fabio Grosso, was notably hit in the face, leading to a total incapacity for work (ITT) of 30 days.

“The LFP competitions commission has decided on the one hand, in application of article 544 of the regulations, (…) to play this match on Wednesday December 6, the first date available with regard to the calendar of the two teams”, detailed the League for the choice of the announced date. She also justified her choice not to decide immediately on the location of the meeting.while awaiting additional elements from the public authorities allowing it to be held in conditions of optimal safety and security for all its stakeholders and the public”she said in a press release.

Three investigations opened, including one for provocation of racial hatred

OL leaders called for sanctions on Tuesday and explained that they wanted to play the match on neutral ground, believing that “the security conditions for playing in Marseille are not met”. Three investigations were opened by the Marseille prosecutor following these incidents. The first two relate to the stone-throwing of the OL bus and another incident of the same type targeting a Lyon supporters bus.

The third, for provocation of racial hatred, targets the behavior of some of the Lyon supporters inside the Vélodrome who made Nazi salutes and uttered monkey cries in the direction of the Marseillais. Entering the “behavior of Lyon supporters in the visitor area” du Vélodrome, the LFP disciplinary committee has opened an investigation and will render its decision on November 22.
