Nearly 24 hours after coming close to elimination, Yohann Ndoye Brouard won the gold medal on Saturday in the 200 meter backstroke in Rome.
Frenchman Yohann Ndoye Brouard experienced an emotional lift in 24 hours, after an incredible semi-final. He thus qualified for the final, Friday August 12, at the time having swum alone, after a problem with the footrest at the start. In the final on Saturday, Yohann Ndoye Brouard (1’55”62) beat Hungarian Benedek Kovacs (1’56”03) and Briton Luke Greenbank (1’56”15).
For her part, Marie Wattel (25”33) took second place in the 50m butterfly final behind the untouchable Sarah Sjöström (24”96), world record holder for this distance and triple world champion .
In the queen discipline of 100 meters freestyle, the Romanian David Popovici (46”86) broke the world record of the Brazilian Cesar Cielo, who had held since 2009. He won his first European title in the long course. Off to a good start, Frenchman Maxime Grousset broke down in the last 50 meters and finished fourth (47”78)
In the 50 meter backstroke, Analia Pigrée (27”68) and Mary-Ambre Moluh (27”86), managed to qualify for the final by finishing in the first two places in their semi-final. In the final, they will try to create a surprise against the Italian Silvia Scalia, victorious in the other semi-final in 27”39. Finally, Antoine Viquerat took second place in his 200m breaststroke semi-final in 2’11”14.
