The mask is no longer mandatory in public transport in Quebec

Public transport users in Quebec are no longer required to wear a mask as of this morning.

The provincial government had introduced this mandatory measure in public transport and in indoor public spaces in the summer of 2020, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On June 8, the Minister of Health, Christian Dubé, indicated that the government had made this decision following a recommendation from Public Health, which observed a downward trend in new cases of COVID-19.

Minister Dubé suggested “to people who are not comfortable (with the lifting of this restriction) to continue to wear the mask” and he asked people to respect everyone’s personal choice.

By mid-May, Quebec had become the latest province to remove the requirement to wear face coverings in indoor public spaces.

Note that wearing a mask remains mandatory in hospitals, long-term care accommodation centers (CHSLDs), CLSCs and clinics, as well as on planes and trains.

People with COVID-19 are also required to wear a mask during any social interaction for 10 days, as are people who live in the same home as an infected person.

Since its appearance in Quebec, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 15,523 people.
