The mascots of the Paris Olympics are… Phrygian caps

The mascots for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been unveiled. This is the Phrygian cap.

The Phrygian cap is a headgear, often red in color, with a blue-white-red cockade. It is one of the symbols of the French Republic, since it recalls freedom, and is in a way an updated version of a cap that was worn during antiquity in certain places such as Persia, the Balkans, Thrace , Dacia and Phrygia, a region where today’s Turkey is located — and where its name comes from.

It is still today one of the attributes of Marianne, a symbolic figure of the French Republic.

The Olympic cap will be triangular, and will be topped with a friendly smile, blue eyes, a tricolor cockade and matched with oversized sneakers in bright colors.

The organizing committee said it did not want to choose an animal or other imaginary creature, as had been the case at previous Games. Rather, he wanted to bet on a symbol that represents “an ideal”. He said he chose the cap “as an allegory for freedom”.
