(Los Angeles) The new superhero movie The Marvels took the lead at the North American box office for its first week in theaters, however only collecting $47 million, according to estimates on Sunday from specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
“This release is an unprecedented drop for a Marvel film at the box office,” commented specialist analyst David Gross.
According to him, several factors can explain this result, such as the rise in power of streamingweariness with films “lacking imagination” and the strike of Hollywood actors which prevented them from promoting films until an agreement was reached at the end of the week.
In this feature film, Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvelis assigned two partners from the Disney+ series Wanda Vision And Miss Marvel : Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, and Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani.
The three women are forced to team up to save the Universe as they involuntarily swap bodies when using their powers, due to an anomaly.
In second place, the horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s grossed $9 million between Friday and Sunday in American and Canadian theaters.
The film features haunted animatronic mascots who seek to kill a night security guard, played by Josh Hutcherson, and his little sister in an old pizzeria with abandoned arcade games.
On third place on the podium, the concert film by singer Taylor Swift The Eras Tour, which includes scenes shot at three different concerts, raised $5.9 million.
He is followed by Priscilla, biopic about Elvis Presley’s wife, with $4.8 million. The film, based on the book by Priscilla Presley Elvis and mefollows the tumultuous relationship between her and the rock ‘n’ roll star, from their first meeting to their acrimonious breakup.
In fifth place, Killers of the Flower Moon, by Martin Scorsese, raised $4.7 million. This feature film, which lasts more than three hours, brings together Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro and recounts the murders that targeted the Osage Native American people to seize their oil wealth, in Oklahoma at the beginning of the 20th century.e century.
