Bad news for nature and for humans: the number of mangroves tends to decrease. In Guadeloupe, this idea is in everyone’s mind.

The mangrove is both a lung and a safeguard for Guadeloupe. Magnificent landscapes, but also essential to both Man and Earth. To discover its secrets, you have to go there in a canoe. “It is a very pretty place, this luxuriant and abundant vegetation, it is very impressive”, enthuses a tourist.

Breathtaking landscapes, but also a strong ecological role: the mangrove sucks three to five times more CO2 than a conventional forest. The underwater roots, too, are vital. “If there are still fish in Guadeloupe, it is thanks to the mangroves”, says Christian Rouel, guide. An ecosystem to be preserved from mass tourism, in particular by preventing large ships from mooring near the mangroves. The stake is also ecological, since Guadeloupe largely depends on fishing.
